Those who oppose LGBT lifestyles perceive the rainbow as an affront to their beliefs. Those who advocate for the LGBT community see the rainbow as a positive symbol of love, acceptance and diversity. Not everyone recognizes the rights of the LGBT community, however, and perception of the rainbow depends upon if you agree or disagree with LGBT lifestyles. Interpersonal intelligence is all about relating to others and sympathizing with someone else’s needs, something required to recognize the rights of persons different from yourself. The rainbow is also interpersonal when it is used by non-LGBT persons who sympathize and show solidarity with gays, lesbians and transgendered people.
This type of positive self-reflection is why the LGBT movement has pride parades all over the world.
Intrapersonal intelligence is demonstrated by the LGBT persons who are so proud of who they are, despite the discrimination they can face for being ‘out’, that they a use this symbol to visually let everyone know they’re a member of the LGBT community. When trying to understand the rainbow symbol in our culture, the intelligences most related to the LGBT rainbow are interpersonal intelligence and intrapersonal intelligence.
